Foods that cause anxiety

Do Certain Foods Trigger Anxiety?

The idea that your gut could be causing your anxiety is a strange one, I know, and often a difficult one to stomach (excuse the pun) as it goes against the tide of current medical thinking.

But if you really think about it, it shouldn’t really be all that surprising.

Many people that I have spoken to know of certain foods that make their anxiety worse, so is it really that much of a stretch to think that there may be others?

This whole idea is not just me stretching other people’s stories though…

It’s based in science!

Lots and lots of science.

One simple example of this was when researchers at the University of Melbourne in Australia wanted to test the relationship between overall diet and levels of anxiety.

So they took a sample of 1046 women aged between 20 and 93 and checked their diets against their levels of anxiety, which they determined through a questionnaire and interview.

What they found was that the women with diets that we typically deem “healthy” with foods like vegetables, fruit, meat, fish and whole grains, had a considerably lower likelihood of suffering from anxiety disorders than the women who ate traditional “western diets” of processed or fried foods, refined grains, sugary products, and beer.

Now of course this doesn’t really prove anything by itself, but I bet you are not considerably surprised by the results. It seems like it should make sense right?

Diet does affect anxiety, and I think you probably knew that already.

What you might not know is to what extent, and that simply eating “healthier” is not enough.
